Preston Railway Station, a vital hub on the West Coast Main Line, saw the introduction of a new cycle facility as part of a government-backed initiative to promote sustainable transportation. Our client, Virgin Trains spearheaded the project, investing £450k over a 16-week period.
The initiative aimed to encourage cycling as a mode of transport to and from the station, with the ultimate goal of facilitating seamless end-to-end customer journeys.
The project involved the construction of a modern cycle hub equipped with dual-level cycle stands, repair stations, and monitored access control linked to the station CCTV.
The scope encompassed excavation, foundation laying, drainage, steel framing, roofing, cladding, and internal finishing. The construction also included provisions for CCTV integration, access control systems, lighting, heating, and fire alarm installations.
Additionally, a retail unit accessible from the platform entrance to Butler Street/car park area was incorporated into the design.
The completed Cycle Hub represents a significant improvement in cycling facilities at the railway station. With secure storage for over 200 bicycles, the hub offers cyclists 24-hour access and peace of mind. The addition of a cycling shop further enhances the amenities, providing maintenance services, bike hire, and a wide range of cycling products.
The official opening of the Bike Hub by Mark Hendrick MP and the positive reception from the local cycling community highlight the project’s success in meeting the needs of commuters and visitors alike.
Shirley Ross, Virgin Trains Station Manager at Preston, expressed pride in the Bike Hub’s contribution to seamless end-to-end journeys for customers.
By providing modern cycling facilities and retail amenities, the hub encourages more people to incorporate cycling into their rail journeys.
