Home » Penny Lane Surgery Refurbishment
The historic building, famously mentioned in The Beatles’ song “Penny Lane,” has been operating as a surgery since 1992. The comprehensive refurbishment aimed to enhance both patient and staff areas while preserving the building’s historical features. The project, completed over 13 weeks and in three phases, successfully modernised the facility while maintaining its unique historical charm.
The refurbishment was carried out in three carefully planned phases to minimise disruption.
Phase One focused on creating a new reception and waiting area, including flooring, seating, radiators, lighting, sockets, a DDA-compliant reception desk, and automated door.
Phase Two transformed the old reception into three new consulting rooms and a staff kitchenette.
In Phase Three, three existing consulting rooms and a nurse’s room were refurbished, and the patient toilet was modernised. An existing structural wall opening was widened to improve corridor flow. The original coved ceiling was uncovered and integrated into the new design, preserving the building’s historical charm.
Special measures included working out of hours, using full height hoarding to keep patients informed, and coordinating with NHS IT, intruder, and fire alarm systems to ensure seamless transitions. Cleanliness and safety were top priorities, with daily reviews and major works scheduled outof-
hours to minimise disruption
The successful refurbishment of Penny Lane Surgery has significantly enhanced its facilities, providing a modern and comfortable environment for both patients and staff.
The reception area is now more accessible, and the new consulting rooms and staff areas have improved the surgery’s operational efficiency.
