Home » Paddington Station – Assisted Travel Lounge
To address the challenges faced by passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility, The Consortia Group were tasked with the construction of an Assisted Travel Lounge. The lounge was to be constructed adjacent to the taxi rank on the upper concourse of Paddington Station.
This project aimed to enhance convenience, comfort, and safety for passengers requiring assistance. Ultimately reducing the risks associated with navigating through the bustling station environment.
The proposed Assisted Travel Lounge would feature seating for 22 people, wheelchair spaces, reduced mobility seating, and a customer information screen. Additionally, the lounge would include essential amenities: lighting, comfort cooling, CCTV, customer information systems (CIS), and a public address (PA) system, all compliant with Network Rail design standards.
The design of the lounge emphasised durability, and adherence to “secured by design” standards to ensure the safety and security of passengers.
The completion of the Assisted Travel Lounge at Paddington Station marked a significant improvement in facilities for passengers with disabilities and reduced mobility. The lounge provided a safe, accessible waiting area adjacent to the taxi rank, eliminating the need for passengers to travel to the main waiting room on platform 1.
Passengers can now access essential amenities, receive assistance from dedicated staff, and utilise mobility buggies for direct transportation to their platforms.
The introduction of the lounge exemplified a commitment to prioritising passenger experience and inclusivity. By addressing the specific needs of passengers with disabilities, the project contributed to creating a more welcoming and accommodating environment at one of Britain’s busiest railway stations, honouring its historic significance while meeting the demands of modern travellers.
