New Train Crew Facilities London Waterloo Station

Client

South West Rail

Location

London

Project Value

£280k

Project duration

12 weeks

Project overview

London Waterloo Station is the UK’s largest in terms of floor space and platform numbers. As part of the £800 million Wessex Capacity Programme aimed at increasing the station’s capacity and enhancing facilities, our company was commissioned to deliver a fast-track Design & Build project to create new staff accommodation for train crew.

This involved constructing a new external envelope within the lower basement zones and fitting out the interior to provide high-quality mess facilities, restrooms, and shower rooms.

Approach

Initial site assessments helped us understand constraints and opportunities within the lower basement zones. We developed comprehensive design plans, including the construction of the external envelope and detailed specifications for interior fit-outs. Close coordination with stakeholders ensured alignment with the overall investment plan.

Installations included accessible suspended ceilings, electrical containment systems, LED lighting, and connections to air handling units (AHU) and WC air extract units. We implemented wall and floor finishes, plumbing and sanitaryware, and installed dado rail trunking with power and data sockets. Fire detection and alarm systems were coordinated, along with integration of telephone, data, and Customer Information System (CIS) equipment.

Scope of works

  • Partitioning and Walls
  • Accessible suspended ceiling
  • Electrical containment
  • LED lighting throughout
  • Connection to AHU and WC air extract unit
  • Kitchenette
  • Storage Provision
  • Wall and Floor Finishes
  • Plumbing and sanitaryware for WCs and shower room
  • power and data sockets
  • Coordination with suppliers for telephone, data, and CIS equipment

Outcome

The project was completed successfully within the 12-week deadline. The newly constructed messroom and facilities, providing train crew with comfortable and functional spaces for rest. SWR hailed the project as a major success, praising the swift delivery and high standard of the finished facilities.

The new messroom and support facilities significantly improved the working environment for train crew, enhancing staff welfare and satisfaction. This project demonstrated our ability to deliver complex, fast-track construction projects in challenging environments.
