Home » Middlesborough Station – Staff Accommodation Works
TransPennine Express sought to modernise the staff facilities at Middlesbrough Station. The project aimed to enhance the daily experience of the station’s employees by providing them with updated, comfortable, and efficient workspaces. The refurbishment included the creation of various amenities such as a staff mess room, locker room, WC facilities, unisex showers, offices, meeting rooms, a quiet room, a prayer room, and a signing on point. However, working within a listed building presented unique challenges. The project demanded a careful balance between modernising the facilities and preserving the historic character of the structure.
Preliminary works began with the design of mechanical and electrical (M&E) systems tailored to meet modern standards while respecting the building’s constraints. Asbestos removal was carried out, followed by the selective demolition of specified areas. This included wall removals and the creation of new openings.
As construction progressed, the team focused on installing new partition walls, ceilings, and doors, which helped redefine the space to meet modern needs. Updated mechanical and electrical systems were installed to ensure the facilities were efficient, safe, and comfortable. High-quality joinery and flooring were added to create a polished and functional environment, and new kitchen facilities were integrated to provide staff with modern amenities.
The transformation of Middlesbrough Station’s staff accommodation was completed on time, delivering facilities that significantly improved the daily experience of the station’s staff. The project stands as a testament to the team’s ability to blend innovation with preservation, addressing unexpected challenges with creative solutions. The staff now enjoy modern, comfortable spaces that cater to their needs. The successful delivery of this project not only met the practical requirements of the staff but also ensured that the integrity of Middlesbrough Station’s historic character was maintained for future generations.
