Clatterbridge Cancer Centre MRI Scanner Removal

Client

Propcare

Location

Bebington

Project Value

£50,000

Project duration

1 Week

Project overview

The Clatterbridge Cancer Centre NHS Foundation Trust, renowned as one of the UK’s leading cancer care  providers, serves a population of 2.4 million across Cheshire, Merseyside, and the surrounding areas. To uphold its commitment to delivering world-class cancer treatment, the Centre requested the removal of a 5tonne MRI scanner to allow for an upgrade. This project demanded meticulous planning and execution to minimise disruption to patient care and hospital operations.

Approach

To facilitate the move, a crane lift was supervised to safely handle the delicate and heavy MRI scanner. This required the removal of the roof to create the necessary access point, as well as the dismantling of the Faraday cage, an essential component for the scanner’s functionality. To ensure safety and operational efficiency, the hospital’s car park was closed over the weekend, providing unobstructed access for the required machinery and personnel.

Collaboration with hospital staff was central to the project’s success. Their input ensured that disruption to patient services and daily operations was minimised. After the scanner was successfully removed, the roof was promptly reinstalled and made watertight to protect the facility from any potential damage. The faraday cage was reinstated followed by careful replacement of ceiling tiles, and the area was thoroughly cleaned and restored to its original condition.

All work was completed within one week, a testament to the project team’s efficient planning and execution. This ensured minimal downtime and allowed hospital operations to resume smoothly.

Scope of works

  • Temporary roof removal
  • Dismantle Faraday cage
  • Supervise crane lift
  • Reinstall and waterproof roof
  • Replace ceiling tiles
  • Clean and restore to original condition

Outcome

The successful removal of the MRI scanner highlighted the effectiveness of precise project management and strong collaboration. By minimising disruption, the hospital was able to maintain its focus on delivering exceptional patient care throughout the process.

The project was completed within the allocated budget of £300,000, demonstrating cost-effective planning and resource management. Adhering to the one-week timeline further showcased the team’s ability to deliver results under a tight schedule.
