Bristol Temple Meads Station

Client

Great Western Railway

Location

Bristol Temple Meads

Project Value

£675k

Project duration

16 weeks

Project overview

The project, involved significant mechanical services upgrades to the Grade I listed building.

Serving as a critical transport hub in Bristol, the station, originally designed by Isambard Kingdom Brunel, posed unique challenges due to its historical significance, location, and ongoing operations. With a project value of £675k and a duration of 16 weeks, the task encompassed installing modern ventilation and air conditioning systems while ensuring minimal disruption to the station’s daily activities.

Approach

Consortia employed a meticulous approach to overcome the inherent challenges of working within a heritage site and transport hub. Given the limitations on crane access and the need to transport equipment manually to the roof, Consortia opted for innovative solutions, using flat pack transportation for equipment and assembling in situ.

The project required a comprehensive suite of services, including the installation of energy-efficient air conditioning and ventilation systems integrated with fire/smoke damper systems. The team executed various tasks, such as implementing Building Management System (BMS) controls, modifying heating systems, upgrading electrical mains distribution, installing LED lighting, and completing suspended ceilings, joinery, and decoration works.

Scope of works

  • New energy-efficient air conditioning and ventilation
  • Integrated fire/smoke damper system
  • BMS controls
  • Heating system modifications
  • Structural steelwork
  • Upgraded electrical mains distribution and power supplies
  • LED lighting
  • Suspended ceilings, joinery, and decorations

Outcome

Despite the complexities associated with working within a historic building and an operational railway station, Consortia delivered the Bristol Temple Meads Ventilation & Air Conditioning project on time and within budget.

The upgraded mechanical services now contribute to the station’s efficiency, comfort, and safety for the millions of passengers it serves annually. The successful completion of this project not only enhances the infrastructure of Bristol’s oldest station but also showcases Consortia’s capability to execute demanding projects in unique environments while meeting client expectations, earning commendation for successfully executing the challenging installation in a live mainline station environment.
