National Express sought to enhance the heating and electrical services of the main passenger concourse at Birmingham Coach Station. Given the station’s continuous 24/7 operation, the project required meticulous planning to ensure that upgrades were completed without disrupting station activities.
The primary objective was to retrofit new heating pipework and electrical supplies through the existing ceiling void, ensuring that all new services remained hidden to maintain the station’s aesthetics.
Consortia developed a comprehensive schedule that minimised disruption to the station’s operations. This involved detailed programming to align with the station’s peak and off-peak hours.
New heating pipework and electrical supplies were retrofitted through the existing ceiling voids, ensuring that none of the new installations were visible using architectural ducting blending seamlessly with the existing structure.
A bespoke air curtain heating system with concealed ducting was installed to enhance passenger comfort and energy efficiency. A de-stratification fan system was implemented to improve energy efficiency by promoting even heat distribution. Heating pumps and controls were installed within the main plant room, with heating flow and return pipework extending throughout the plant room and concourse.
Thermal insulation was applied to the new installations, and electrical power supplies and BMS control modifications were completed. This involved cabling adjustments and modifications to the suspended ceiling to accommodate the new systems.
The project concluded successfully within the 8-week timeframe and the allocated budget of £240,000. The upgraded heating system significantly improved the energy efficiency of the concourse, resulting in better temperature control and reduced energy consumption. The architectural ducting concealed the new services, preserving the station’s visual appeal.
National Express was pleased with the seamless integration of the new systems, which enhanced passenger comfort without compromising the station’s aesthetics. The station continued to operate without interruption throughout the project, demonstrating the effectiveness of Consortia’s detailed planning and safety measures.
