Penny Lane, Liverpool – The Consortia Group is delighted to announce the successful completion of a major refurbishment project at the historic building on Penny Lane, formerly known as Barclays Bank and famously immortalised in The Beatles’ song “Penny Lane.” This building has been operating as Penny Lane Surgery since 1992, and our extensive upgrade has significantly enhanced its facilities, improving both patient and staff areas.
The refurbishment, which spanned 13 weeks and was completed in three planned phases, preserved the building’s historical charm while introducing modern facilities. Our team took special care to uncover and incorporate the original coved ceiling into the new design, maintaining a connection to the building’s storied past.

Phase One of the renovation focused on creating a new reception and waiting area. We removed the existing ceiling, flooring, and other fixtures to install new vinyl flooring, seating, radiators, lighting, and sockets. The reception area now features a DDA-compliant desk and automated door, ensuring accessibility for all patients.
Phase Two transformed the old reception area into three new consulting rooms and a kitchenette for staff use. The consulting rooms were outfitted with new partitions, doors, radiators, sinks, and water supplies, along with updated flooring, lighting, and electrical sockets. New desks, patient examination beds, and privacy curtains were also installed to enhance the functionality and comfort of these spaces.
Phase Three involved refurbishing three existing consulting rooms and a nurse’s room. Additionally, we modernised the patient toilet with new wall tiles, ceiling, flooring, and lighting. To improve the flow along the corridor, an existing structural wall opening was widened.
Throughout the project, we ensured that there was minimal disruption to the surgery’s operations. Key holders worked out of hours to ensure the facility was ready for patients each morning. Full-height hoarding with information boards kept patients informed about the progress of the works, while coordination with NHS IT, intruder, and fire alarm systems ensured seamless transitions.
Maintaining a high level of cleanliness was a top priority, with daily reviews to ensure the safety of patients, staff, and workers. Major structural works were scheduled for out-of-hours to minimise disruption, and careful coordination of service isolations for water and electricity was conducted to avoid any service interruptions.
Craig Barton, Managing Director of The Consortia Group, stated,
“Working on such a landmark building has been a privilege. We’ve modernised the medical facilities while respecting and preserving its history. The successful completion of this project highlights the dedication and collaboration of our entire team.”
Dr Felicity Maddocks commented.
“Consortia were great to work with, they were professional, reliable and worked with us to keep the surgery open throughout the building work with little disruption to our patients. I would definitely recommend Consortia to other colleagues or businesses needing building work done.”
As the surgery opens its doors to a new chapter, it continues to be a cornerstone of the Penny Lane community, providing essential healthcare services with a touch of historical charm.
