Celebrating the women at The Consortia Group

Construction is often seen through the lens of what happens on site, the buildings, the infrastructure, the physical transformation of places and spaces.

But the reality is that construction is powered by far more than what happens on site alone.

Behind every project is a team of people working across finance, IT, operations, compliance, and marketing, keeping the business running, supporting our teams, and ensuring we deliver for our clients.

At The Consortia Group, we recognise the lack of women working in site-based roles. As an industry, we know there is still work to do to encourage more women into operational construction careers, and it’s something we are committed to supporting.

What we are proud of, however, is the number of talented and dedicated women working across our business, contributing at every level and playing an instrumental role in how we operate every day.

From managing complex financial systems to strengthening our compliance and information management processes, women across our team help shape the way our business works behind the scenes.

To mark International Women’s Day, we spoke to two colleagues about their journeys and what they enjoy most about their roles.

Debbie – Information & Integration Partner

Debbie’s role sits at the intersection of technology, compliance and risk management — ensuring that the systems we rely on as a business are robust, secure and fit for purpose.

In many professional environments, Debbie reflects that the traditional “handshake” culture could sometimes feel intimidating.

However, having a genuine passion for your industry can make a difference.

“If you have a passion for what you do, it helps you find your voice.”

Debbie has always had an interest in improving processes and tailoring systems so they truly support how teams work in practice. That curiosity naturally led her towards risk management and compliance areas that play a critical role in protecting both the business and the people within it.

“I’ve always been interested in looking at how we can improve processes and tailor systems to meet how we work.”

For Debbie, the most rewarding part of the role is seeing positive change take place.

“The best part of the job is seeing changes I’ve implemented make a difference and getting buy-in from the team.”

Her work focuses heavily on information management and data protection — responsibilities she feels strongly aligned with both her personal values and the values of the business.

“Protecting people and their data fits well with my values and the values of the business.”

Her advice to others entering the industry is simple but powerful:

“Be curious. Ask questions. Be a proactive listener.

It’s okay to ask questions. Listen, take a moment to breathe — and then act.”

Jennifer – Senior Finance Controller

Jennifer’s journey into construction didn’t follow a traditional path.

She originally trained and qualified in floristry after starting her career in catering. But while working in the business, she discovered something unexpected, she enjoyed the operational side of things just as much as the creative work.

“I found that I really enjoyed the paperwork and costing of stock.”

After becoming a mum, Jennifer began looking for a role that offered working hours that better suited family life, something that, historically, women have often had to consider more carefully than men.

That search led her to an office role.

“I absolutely loved it. I felt like I was doing something for me.”

Jennifer joined The Consortia Group 12 years ago and hasn’t looked back since.

Today, as Senior Finance Controller, she plays a key role in ensuring the financial stability and efficiency of the business, while also supporting colleagues across the team.

One of the aspects she enjoys most is helping others develop, particularly apprentices who are just starting out in their careers.

“My favourite thing about my job is the team and teaching the apprentices starting out on their journey, not just in accounts but across the team.”

Her advice to women building their careers is clear:

  • Enjoy what you do and aim for a career — not just a payslip
  • Attend training and stay up to date with industry developments
  • Don’t downplay your achievements or apologise for your success
  • Connect with other women in your industry
  • Show interest in different departments
  • And find a mentor if you can

“Regardless of the industry you work in, if you enjoy your job and want a career, you can do it.”

Looking ahead

At The Consortia Group, we recognise that the construction industry still has progress to make when it comes to gender balance, particularly in operational site roles.

Encouraging more women into these careers is something we want to support as the industry continues to evolve.

But today is also an opportunity to celebrate the women who are already making an impact across our business. Their expertise, dedication and leadership help ensure that the business runs smoothly, projects are delivered successfully, and our values are lived every day.

On International Women’s Day, we’re proud to recognise and celebrate them.
