At The Consortia Group, we take great pride in delivering high-quality construction and refurbishment projects in cities that blend rich history with modern progress. York is one such city—a place where heritage and innovation come together seamlessly. Working at York Station, one of the busiest railway hubs in Yorkshire, has been a rewarding experience, despite the unique logistical challenges that come with it.
We recently completed two projects at the station with both projects aiming to repurpose and modernise existing spaces.
The Academy at York: A Modern Training Facility
The refurbishment of The Academy at York focused on upgrading an underutilised space into a fully functional, high-spec training facility. The project included the creation of a dedicated training room, meeting room, and office spaces. Touchscreen TVs, sound systems designed for accessibility needs and upgraded M&E systems were all carefully installed to enhance the learning environment.
One of the main challenges was navigating the logistics of transporting materials across the station. As the space was located on an island platform, all materials—including 35kg soundproof plasterboards, ceiling tiles, light fittings, and carpet tiles—had to be transported from the long-stay car park near Platform 3, through lifts, subways, and stairs to Platform 9. This process required meticulous planning to always ensure minimal disruption to passengers while prioritising safety.
Despite these constraints, our team successfully delivered a high-quality finish while maintaining strict health and safety measures. The result? A professional and well-equipped training space that meets the needs of LNER staff.
The Ballroom at York: A Heritage Restoration
The refurbishment of redundant rooms above the Duke of York pub, formerly part of a grand ballroom sought to create modern meeting spaces for station staff while preserving the station’s architectural integrity.
Our scope of work included restoring original sash windows, replacing outdated fluorescent lighting with energy-efficient LED fixtures, and installing TVs. A breakout area with tea-making facilities was also introduced, improving the functionality of the space.
One challenge in this project was transporting materials safely and efficiently up a narrow spiral staircase
Proud to Work in York
York is a city steeped in history, and it has been a privilege to work on projects that contribute to the ongoing development of such an important transport hub. Our work at York Station not only improves facilities for LNER staff but also ensures that modern functionality and heritage preservation go hand in hand.
